      I don't think it's a coincidence that the New Deal came in response to the Great Depression--people banded together to make it through, and realized they could do more than that.

      There was also a strong labor movement, which is nothing if not not grounded in empathy.

      We cannot simply copy the successes of the past, but we can and should analyze them for what they can yield us.
