aggressively focus on. Frankly what Bush is trying to do is turn into a "poor people program" (read for the ghetto poor), so that most people start to equate it with welfare.

    •  The Reason They Don't.... (0+ / 0-)

....if because they don't want to direct attention to the fact that they plan to pay for it by foisting hundreds or even thousands of dollars of additional tax burden on cigarette smokers (i.e. their working class base...the same people who voted for Democrats last year on a message of restoring "economic fairness").  That's why this is a double-edged sword for Democrats....and may end up hurting them more if they win this battle since their base will be enraged for being used.

"Do you think the government should provide a national health insurance program for all children under the age of 18, even if this would require higher taxes?"

....that 73% of Americans are fine with the other 25% paying more taxes.  Actually, this figure would probably be accurate even among smokers if the burden was shared....but it isn't.  The lowest income demographic of Americans is expected to foot the bill for this.  It's wrong on many levels.

The message I get out of this is that if you really care about children's health care, start smoking.  If you choose not to smoke, you're pretty much just as responsible as George Bush for defunding children's health care, right?

Share the burden or don't bother.
