    can run into the thousands and hundreds of thousands for illnesses related to premature birth, chronic conditions and surgical needs as well as hospitalizations.

    You're limiting your thinking to healthy kids with colds who need shots and nothing else. The reality is quite different. An unexpected or unavoidable illness can bankrupt a family.

        many middle-income families work for employers who either don't offer insurance or the premiums are so high that they can't afford them - even if they are living simply without additional expenses.

        Parents will bend over backwards to make sure that their children are cared for, but parents only make a certain amount of money. If the choice comes down to health care or food, parents are going to choose food.
