While Russ did indee run a strictly positive, issues oriented campaign, he has this luxury due to a couple fortuitous circumstances. In his Primary, the other 2 Dems ran big money smear jobs on each other. Meanwhile I was managing Roger Faulkner's kamikazi challenge to Bob Kasten in the Republican Primary. By the time Russ emrged as the nominee, we'd painted Kasten as "The dimmest bulb in the Seanate," and a falling down drunk. Not that hard, because both were true.

    Your Candidate is a Joke.

since Jim Moody is also a graduate of Haverford College.  I am well aware of all the details in that race, including the key that the third candidate, Checota, in what I think was the final debate said something like if people didn't vote for him he hoped they would vote for Russ.

Had Russ NOT run a positive campaign, there is no way he could have won the primary, being so heavily outspend.

Also, look at his career since, with his regularly touching base with people through his town meetings.  Even some people who disagree with him will respect him because he is willing to listen to what you have to say.   And one can note that his voting against the so-called USA PATRIOT Act probably gained him support for standing up for that in which he believed.

Those who can, do. Those who can do more, TEACH! If impeachment is off the table, so is democracy

      •  All correct, doesn't refute my above. (0+ / 0-)

His PATRIOT vote meshed well with his rejection of the Assault Weapons Ban, earning him the support in 2004 of libertarian leaning nort' woods guys. Nearly all the split tickets which left him a comfortable lead while Kerry eked through came from deer hunt territory.

One thing I've appreciated about him is that whenver he does something that he believes needs to be done (the censure, the no on Iraq, the Patriot Act) you will see an article in the local paper illustrating his reasons.

He really does care what the voters think and believes that the debate should be discussed through careful, thoughtful explanations.

Even people who don't agree with what he says have tremendous respect for him due to his insistence that politics CAN be a thoughful debate with the representatives and the people he represents.

We, as voters, could demand this kind of dialogue instead of sound bites and TV ads.  I don't see it happening in the near future, but some time people will get tired of the rhetoric, take the initiative to really read what candidates are saying and do the homework of looking at their records.

        Until then?
