whoever gets nominated will have to be the blandest non-issue to get past the Senate. (unless the Dems roll over and play dead)

I'm suspicious about the goings on at the end of July and beginning of August.  There were also rumors about Bush cutting a deal with Reid and agreeing not to do any recess nominations.  There's been talk about a "leading Republican" who has been making deals (though that came out when Rove resigned, via Novak).

Anyway, if it's Chertoff, how very interesting that Bush would replace the head of Homeland Security just when the rumors and threats of a terrorist attack have been so apparently dire.  Just the thing to do -- put a new guy in the job?  Yes, they're so concerned about an August attack.  Right.  Do you think the JoePublic will start to get it now?  No, probably not.  Anyone who hasn't already seen the light won't be starting to see it anytime soon.
