I'd be curious to see some stats on how often folks break laptops.  I'm terrible.  I've killed four laptops in the past three years.  Being the cheapskate that I am, I always find a way to keep them going way past their expiration date and suffer through unreliable screen functioning, missing keys and slow or nonexistent bootups.  And, of course, I NEVER throw them away.

I'd love to see one a them dandy DKos online polls asking people how many laptops they've killed in the past few years.

Two by soup, one falling from the overhead rack in an airplane. "Let me put that where it will be safe.", the stewart said. And an iBook succumed to general abuse. This one is scared to death because it is going to Europe with me and knows that I will probably destroy it with European plugs. If you know what the best plugs to get when going abroad it would be appreciated if you pass the info along. I'm begining to feel like a laptop serial killer

I was worried about the same thing when preparing for a trip to Peru (220) last year.

Fact is, modern chargers (Apple gear handles it very well) can handle both voltages, and just need a plug adapter(s) for Europe. Peru's wall sockets are this weird hybrid that accepts both Euro and American formats. Just plugged my phone, camera charger and iPod right in wherever we landed, no special chargers necessary.

Hair drier might be a problem (though a good one will have a 110/220 switch somewhere on it)...

Dell Auction is a pretty good way to go.  You can pick up a decent laptop for around $600.  Expect problems, but if you're just going to break it anyhow, you can stand a few problems.

        •  The only laptop I've ever bought cost $300 (0+ / 0-)

The rest have been given to me. It seems I have this magic power that causes what I need (not what I want) to come to me. Yes, it is weird but it has been going on most of my life so I just smile and say thank you and don't try to figure it out.

    •  Mine is four years old (0+ / 0-)

The modem died just before the warranty expired.

Since I didn't want to go without it while it would be getting fixed, I bought a modem card for it.
