A poster above cited the murder of his mother as why he was in favor of the death penalty.

My father was murdered.  It has been my experience with that  murder investigation that has caused me to be strongly against the death penalty.

There is such pressure on the police in high profile cases to convict someone, anyone.  In my dad's case, the police were within an eyelash of arresting 3 different people.  If any of those people had failed to have an alibi (or in one case, a good lawyer), he would have been on trial for his life.  Well, the police may indeed have been right about 1 of those 3 people, but they had to be wrong about 2 of them.

We execute and incarcerate the innocent far, far too often in this country.

And no execution would bring my dear, dear dad back to life.

All it would accomplish is to make my police, my prosecutor, and ultimately my governor, complicit in a legal murder, desensitized to the act of killing.  Personally?  I think his experience as head administrator of the death penalty in Texas did not improve the character of GWB.
