  •  We're not so bad... (0+ / 0-)

...Americans have always had a healthy distrust for intellectualism -- we're comprised of the genetic stock of explorers, adventurers, and religious kooks seeking freedom.

I disagree that the arts are dead, they've simply been commercialized to a sickening extent thanks to public defunding.  Boatloads of creative talent goes into making a film, even a bad film.  Lots of creative people make a living in advertising and TV, too.  Plenty of books -- some excellent -- still get written and a few even published, more published now than ever before, probably more written, too.

Commercialism and TV dumb us down, but they don't need to dumb you or me down.  TV "news" is a greater scourge on our intellect than all the dumb reality shows in the world, but thank goodness for the interweb.  Solution: Turn off the dummy box and go do something smart.

You're right that there are an awful lot of dumb people out there.  Not sure how to rectify that.  Personally, I just try to find the smart ones and hang with them.
