  •  Yup. Well, Dems could take (8+ / 0-)

a strong position because it's the right thing to do, even if the Republicans weren't falling apart.  That the Republicans are falling apart just makes it totally incomprehensible that the Dems aren't.

They seem to be missing that part of the equation, as well.

      •  That's the tough thing. (4+ / 0-)

On the one hand there are the Blue Dogs and the caving senators who don't seem to get that it's the right thing to do.

On the other hand there are members of leadership who do get that getting out of Iraq is the right thing to do, but don't seem to see that their position is strong enough to take a stand on, that the public would be behind them, that Republicans are weak.

And between those two groups, we're all screwed.

    •  The Repugs obtained power by taking a stand (0+ / 0-)

That's how they got into power in the first place.

When you take a stand, people who are not paying attention, assume that you must be right. Otherwise, why would you be so bold? People who appear to be that confident can't possibly be lying! This is, of course, the BIG LIE technique that Goebbels  outlined 60 years ago and which Bonzo applied with such frightening efficiency here from 1960's until his brain-death in the 1980's. It's basic chimpanzee signalling-- the strong one must be the one that has truth on his or her side.

However, the flipside of Goebells' observation is also true: if you are being weak, mealy-mouthed, weaselly, squirrely, and shifty, it appears to people who aren't paying attention, that you are lying out your ass, or have no integrity. This is how Carter lost his job, and Mondale, Dukakis, Gore, and Kerry never obtained theirs.

The weirdest thing about this, is that many the Dems who are acting like such spineless globs of protoplasm, actually think that they are showing courage and principle and backbone! They think they are "standing up" for comity, respect, bipartisanship, civility, nuance, reasoned discourse, "maturity", etc., and standing "firm" against their opponents' base competitive natures. At least, that's what their rich corporate lobbyist friends keep telling them that they're doing. And they are getting chumped in the process. Worse, we are getting chumped in the process.
