  •  Ike again. As a kid I said "I Like Ike" --the (5+ / 0-)

slogan in those days when I had no idea of what he really stood for. Now that I know I can say with great conviction and enthusiasm:

I REALLY REALLY REALLY LOVE IKE.

There is no question that, in retrospect, Eisenhower was appreciated to be a much better president than he was given credit for while he was there;  his prescient comment on the rise of the military-industrial complex is additional evidence of that.  But recall that he served as an impediment to progress in the civil rights movement, arguing on the side of the segregationists in Brown v. Board of Education.  Also, he could have used is bully pulpit to rein in Joe McCarthy during the dark days or the red scare and the blacklist.  Overall, I think we can say that Eisenhower was, on the whole, a pretty good president for a Republican, but he was still a Republican.

listened to him on the war machine we would have had a different and much better society. Except, of course, for the pesky rights thing!

I was reacting to many quotes I've read here in recent days revealing a much better overall comprehension he had of what the war machine was capable of becoming and the role it would play.

Funny, but as a child I saw his car driving by on its way to the airport, with flags on it, and maybe one or two cars with it, and we shouted, "I like Ike!" That's the very last time I said anything positive about a Republican except for a brief flirtation with Barry Goldwater which was promptly ended when I came across John F. Kennedy. Saw him giving a speech and that was that.

enforce desegregation at Central High School in Little Rock. Certainly he could have done more but didn't totally turn his back to desegration. In today's context, we would be carving his mug into Mt. Rushmore. Can you see Chris Mathews now?... "Tonight on Hardball... Ike... hot love with Kay Summersby or not?"

when Republican presidents enforced the laws regardless of how they personally felt about them.  Now we have signing statements.
