in "The Independent" that said the US is building a brand-spankin' new permanent base somewhere near the Iranian border. Apparently, some of the UK troops that are withdrawing from Basra are going to be deployed near this site. Not a lot of details released, but here's the article.

note: it looks like this story has been updated, or is a slightly different version than the one I read the other day. I distinctly remember reading an article about how British troops were angry that, instead of being returned home, they were being sent to this area. The article specifically said the Pentagon is building a permanent base. The link above mentions a new base, but doesn't use the word "permanent". The Independent's website is crashing a bit right now, so I can't find a better link and quote at the moment.

I remember a time when the American President was the leader of the free world. ****** Repeat after me: "Neoconservatism has failed America."

They're shaping and reshaping the story.

    •  Petraeus' testimony (2+ / 0-)

You can find some information about that base in Petraeus' testimony this week.  I don't recall which hearing it was, but I'm pretty sure it was in one of the two Senate hearings on Tuesday.  I think it was the afternoon hearing, but not sure.  He described it as a special type of base, in the south and at the Iranian border.

Here is an AFP story about it:

The base, which the military describes as a "life support area", will be set up near the headquarters of the Department of Border Enforcement in Badrah, in the central province of Wasit.

It's also worth looking it up in the hearing transcripts though, because Petraeus was questioned about it.
