    The "casual news consumer" also shares a large portion of the blame, doesn't (s)he? If we are so interested in the subject and have so much information at hand, the fact that the "casual" consumer does not reflects poorly on the intellectual curiosity of the consumer. Look, everyone, including the casual consumer, knows that the media really does not care much about hard news and is largely ratings-based (they should have figured out from now by the hours of coverage the media devotes to worthless celebrity stories). However, we must ask ourselves why such worthless, lazy, and misdirected reporting from the media gets high ratings. Perhaps it's because the public is really not that interested in hard news, in which case the problem circles right back to the public.
