I fail to see how a cigarette tax is predatory. The term "predatory" would indicate that it is trapping people into paying for it. Using tobacco is a choice. They are duping people - it is an upfront tax, and they are not preying on people by taxing a necessity, such as air or drinking water.

The goverment has the right to tax more than a company profits on a product. I don't see how that is unethical. I'm not going to shed a tear for the corporate interests that are poisoning people with an addictive product.

As DemFromCT mentions, if this tax causes some people to quit, then we eventually end up paying less for cancer, emphysema and other smoking-related illnesses. The money from that shift will take time to balance out. However, due to tobacco's highly addictive characteristics, any significant reduction in tax revenue from this will not be felt for a while. In the meantime, poor children who do not have healthcare today get healthcare NOW.

I don't see this unethical in any way, shape or form. And, it doesn't seem stupid, either.

I remember a time when the American President was the leader of the free world. ****** Repeat after me: "Neoconservatism has failed America."
