    And cheerleader for Total. He doesn't want France to be left behind the latest efforts to capture buying rights to Iranian oil if the US invades.

      Total is in Iran - it's pretty much the only one of the majors to have actually invested in an oil&gas project in Iran in the past 10 years (South Pars 2&3), despite the US sanctions, and it's been a very frustrating experience. Iran has NOT made its mind about opening up to foreign investments, and has put many obstacles to these, with the result that most groups have given up out of exhaustion more than anything else.

      I actually saw Sarkozy's bellicose stance towards Iran as a sign that Total no longer had any big interest in further investment in Iran and did not care about the fallout of a more difficult diplomatic relationship.
