  •  So true (13+ / 0-)

In May I was traveling from South Carolina to the Midwest for my youngest daughter's graduation. Another of my daughter's, and her boyfriend, were traveling with me. Both are 19 and biracial.
In Tennessee we took a side trip off an exit to see some of the Great Smoky Mountains. Heading back to  Interstate 40 we came upon a nice little family restaurant.  It was around 1:30 p.m. on a Sunday. We walked in at a busy time, the church crowd.  The only empty table was up by the cash register and the door.
After so many years both my daughter and me are used to the glances, the one person leaning over to another and whispering with "that look". It had gotten to where I didn't see it anymore..until that day.
For the first time I felt like we were the objects of a freak show.  And the hate was so evident in most peoples eyes, leers like I have never seen before.  We just ignored it or else the ones standing in line to pay that were right next to our table we would finally say "Hi, how are you?"  when it got to the point their stares were too long and to0 glaring.
There was a TV up in the corner of the restaurant with the closed captioning on.
Do I have to tell anyone here what news channel was on?

Indifference is one of the greatest enemies we face today.

It saddens me that this still happens in the 21st century.

Well, that and the mountains of east TN.

Western NC would have been exactly the same.

doesn't it make you feel all warm inside how they follow the Christ's teachings to love our neighbours, though?
