  •  I have been to St. Louis and it is (0+ / 0-)

a nice city.  When I lived in Cincinnati I was appalled at how the powers had built a huge coliseum for baseball and football right on the water (so the fans could see the river!!!) and thereby cutting the residents off from their river.  But the St Louis planners had kept the city open right down to the water.  It made the city feel so open. We have BART in our area and the minorities have not used it as a way to integrate the suburbs as they feared.  BART has been a life saver for this metropolis.  Maybe poor air quality will get you public transporation.

bulk of our transportation money on our highways and none on other modes of transportation.

I agree that it is a nice city and as a lifelong native i will always try to boost it. When we embrace all cultures, that is. What often burns my bacon is when I hear people warn not to cross certain boulevards as if they would be entering DMZs I travel all over the city and will defy anyone to tell me where I should go or not go. To me integration works when it dispells stereotypes of all kinds.

      •  no bad neighborhoods, just bad people (0+ / 0-)

And they can be ANYWHERE, even in 'da burbs'!!

I always like to say, that folks don't start out wanting their neighborhood to be the "crack block, or the "heroin block".

        •  So right! (0+ / 0-)

Leonard Pitts has a continuing series called "What Works" and in an article two weeks ago told of a neighborhood that did pull themselves out of crime alley. (  Read more of his column in the Miami Herald
