    WHAT is planted.  Agricultural land in general loses topsoil.  Here's one interesting link I found on "the Google".

      Land farmed with horses, oxen, mules, etc., does much better. And those beasts of burden put their own soil back into the soil, too. True, you can't plant a thousand acres, and the grains would cost more, but it would put a lot more people back to work, and unsubsidized farming would be profitable. Just ask the Amish how profitable farming is.
