as an adolescent.  In the tiny rural Arkansas town where I grew up, Elvis had some Presley cousins whom he came to see a couple of times in the very early 1950s, and we played softball togather a couple of times when he was just Norma Jean Presley's cousin from Tupelo, before he became ELVIS.  Both Elvis and I knew about "living in the Ghetto."  But we were white, he was talented and beautiful, and I was white and smart, and we both got out alive and relatively healthy.  He was lucky, and I was lucky.  Most children in the ghetto are not nearly so lucky, though some are just as beautiful and talented as he, and as smart as I was.  But we were lucky.  And white.

And I know about those young women who cry
"'cause if there's one thing that she don't need
it's another hungry mouth to feed
    In the ghetto."

And I do my best to dry those tears long  before she ever has that baby, "in the ghetto."

Life truly "begins at conception and ends at birth" in the ghetto and in the minds of most Republicans and "Pro-Lifers!"  Ghetto makers!
