    The attitudes of those hearts and minds were set in place long before our arrival on the scene. There was nothing we could do to change them. They had only to survive in order to win that round.

      ... and exploitation, I am sure the hearts and minds were not positively disposed toward believing yet another foreign occupier. However, things like sexual harassment and napalming villages not involved in an attack reaffirm the stereotypes and biases.  My father served in Vietnam from 1970 to 1972. When he returned, I remember distinctly his anger at the South Vietnamese for not wholeheartedly supporting the war.  He called them ingrates and criminals.
