to work and afford health insurance because of heart and or lung disease because you smoke, those taxes will most likely pay for your visits to the ER because you can't breath.

    •  And 20 Years Later..... (0+ / 0-)

.....when you have Alzheimer's and are stuck in a nursing home on the taxpayer's nickel, his cigarette taxes will still be funding you.  In the end, he'll be considerably cheaper than you.

because I am one of the fortunate Americans who can afford long term health care insurance that will cover a nursing home for long term care. But I am among the few. And most Alzheimer's patients die from complications of cardiovascular disease.

....my point is that smokers save money by dying sooner.  Health care costs are going through the roof because of the exploding ranks of geriatrics, not the diminishing ranks of smokers.

that I see and treat on an emergency basis are, or were smokers. They would have half the problems if they had never smoked. I have worked in Emergency Medicine for nearly 30 years, so I get to know the patients and the treating physicians. Many of these patients become chronically ill over years, needing home care, home oxygen, and other specialized equipment and treatment and they live into their seventies and eighties, so they don't necessarily die young, just miserably. And they still smoke. Maybe if onyx gave up smoking, he/she could afford to go to the dentist or maybe have a bad tooth because smoking also causes periodontal disease.
Sorry I took so long to respond back to you but I had to work last night, just got home and have to return to work at 3 pm. So if you post a response, I won't see it for at least 24 hours.
By the way, if you are a smoker, there are programs to help you quit. That and the will power to do it. :o)
