The Hudson's Bay Company was established back in the 1660s to trade fur.  Many of the men who came over to run the "factories" for processing the furs were Scottish. (The Bay is still in business today.)

Over time the way they dealt with the native people they traded with versus the way the American traders dealt with them had a vast impact on our respective countries.

One of the major American players was John Jacob Astor the founder of the American Astor dynasty.
I read a biography about him.
He built his fortune on cheating his trading partners and trading rot gut whiskey for furs.  He didn't care what damage he caused so long as he got his money.

    Jefferson hated what Astor did.
