Remember that one of the main causes of the Irish Potato Famine was the booming export of beef and wheat grown in Ireland to Britain.  Wealthy aristocrats owning Irish land were doing just fine and pulling in high profits throughout. It didn't matter if poor tenant farmers were dying; there were far more Irish laborers available than the aristocrats needed to optimize their assets.

Booming export of agricultural produce from Mexico to America under the aegis of international agribusinesses is completely compatible with starvation of Mexican peasants unable to afford sufficient land or irrigation water to feed themselves, or Mexican urban poor no longer able to afford cornmeal because the corn is being shipped to America to bring in higher prices as feed for biofuels factories.  Feeding poor people has never been an extremely profitable business.

As Clinton I said: trade increases the pie; it's up to nations to split it up domestically in an equitable fashion.

It's up to the wealthy business classes who own the business lobbies to tell their agents, the elected politicians, to share the wealth with the former middle class workers whose living standards have been devastated...

        HA!

Bill Clinton is still trumpeting the virtues of "free trade" as he jet sets to and from Davos to hob-knob with the wealthy international elites who control the current system of corporate managed trade and labor arbitrage.

The fact that Clinton and Newt Gingrich collaborated to ram NAFTA through congress should never be forgotten.

If the Democratic Party wishes to be a force for progressive change, the free trade DLC-ers must be challenged.

Lost your job to free trade, outsourcing or non-immigrant visa workers yet?

...Mexican labor all it did was shift wealth in America from the middle class in to an economic elite who were already wealthy.( see Paul Krugman on this) There is no way to justify it.

It was and is a rip by a small majority of the ownership management class o a majority of the people in the first and third worlds. Anyone who defends this ongoing disaster of trade policy it is a guilty of the crimes of manipulative greed as the principles who are becoming uber rich. And worse this larceny was done in the name of free trade. No wonder the folks who worked this disastrous so called free trade policy are called Neo-Cons and Neo-Liberals as traditional Conservatives and Liberals both have better sense and better morality.

NAFTA  along with all the other ignorant trade that serve the greed of a small class are bringing on a depression the likes of which the world has yet to see. Personally, I hope the people who managed this disaster are left hanging from lamp poles the world over as a warning to future oligarchs that it wrong to rape the worlds workers and destroy successful economies just to garner additional personal wealth.  These people are the authors of wars suffering and death, and are not fit to live among civilized human beings. They are the equivalent of Attila the Hun they just don’t do there own killing and they take baths and wear expensive clothing there the difference stops.
