Even if Gore isn't on the ballot in any states during the primary season, he can still be nominated at the National Convention.

Consider the following (admittedly highly unlikely) scenario:  Of the current candidates, 2 or 3 or 4 of them are still in the running after February 5th since each has won some states.  They each continue to win a respectable amount of delegates through the spring.  The Democratic National Convention would commence for the first time in decades where we didn't know who the nominee was going to be.

In such a brokered convention, it is possible that no agreement could be reached among the candidates and their delegates.  Say you have a delegate breakdown such as:  45% Clinton, 25% Obama, 20% Edwards, 10% Richardson.  No one has a majority and no candidate wants to release their delegates to Clinton, so Gore lets it be known that if nominated, he would accept.  Some candidates release their delegates to Gore, and some more delegates are peeled away from the other candidates.  It is conceivable that Gore could get a majority of the delegate votes and be the nominee.

Again, this is highly unlikely, but not impossible.  When you show up to your state's caucus or convention where national delegates are chosen, you may want to ask the individuals if they would support Gore as a second choice.

If efforts to put Gore on the Ballot in several states are successful, he could have his own delegates as part of the mix. Some states, like California, do allow names to be placed on the primary ballot without the candidates signature. That could be a big chuck that splits the votes even further.
