  •  I don't know if there was ever a poll, (7+ / 0-)

but the same sort of discussions ensued over here when the wonderful and notably left-wing playwright-actor-intellectual-activist Dario Fo won the Nobel Prize for literature.

Some years back he was even prohibited from visiting the U.S. because of his leftist (seen as pro-communist) leanings. The ban has since been lifted.

others, paying for special minibuses and vans needed by associations working with the handicapped; any of these organizations could apply to him for the gift, and he even ended up going on tour with his wife to add more money to the coffers, because the requests were so numerous that the Nobel prize money wasn't sufficient.

At that time I grabbed the opportunity to take my older son to see him (in a version of his famous "Mistero Buffo", updated to include barbs against Berlusconi, then in power, paired with a solo piece by his wife, also), and afterwards managed to meet him and get an autograph with dedication (for my younger, handicapped son, also named Dario) on one of his books (his books and videocassettes were purposely being sold in the theatre lobby, with all proceeds going to his "cause").

A great man, and fascinating to watch and listen to.
