  •  Only a crisis -- (9+ / 0-)

actual or perceived -- produces real change. When that crisis occurs, the actions that are taken depend on the ideas that are lying around.
                         --Milton Friedman

This quote begins the essay form of Disaster Capitalism by Naomi Klein in the October edition of Harper's magazine.

It seems to me, IMHO, that the "ideas lying around" after 9/11 were the PNAC manifesto and the Gecko ideology that "greed is good".

Add to that the inherently evil dispositions of Cheney and company, the 30 plus years of simmering hate, and you have a recipe for disaster.

Maybe it might be up to liberals and progressives to see that the ideas lying around are our ideas.

For myself, I can only rage at the machine, write a line or two, get ready to die soon and clutch at hope in younger, more able citizens rising up and insisting NO. Not in my name. Not in the name of my country.

of Republican and Bechtel fame was, and is, well positioned to put this strategy into practice. As are many other Friedman disciples.

Klein's got some solid facts. Those ideas weren't just lying around. They've been promoted by people associated with Friedman in and out of government for years.

Her point is that those ideas have never won in the "marketplace of ideas" so they have to be imposed on government.

I guess people are too stupid to pick the right economic theorists according to the Chicago school. Or maybe they understand all too well that the system proposed screws the average person.
