    The power is maintained in a cylcic relation between government and corporations. But we increasingly see people who respect government only for its corporate activity: "investing" money in programs, branding, the entire "government run like a business" that is the Conservative vision. And with the revolving door between corporations (including even nonprofit think tanks, which just spend their profit in nonreturning expenses), there isn't a great distinction. And then there's the outsourcing of government power like Blackwater, and eventually policymaking (though the AEI is already doing that).

    Gerald Ford (R-MI) was said to be "the senator from General Motors". I think that's a pretty succinct description of what I'm talking about.
