Democrats, but I doubt they were very progressive.  Most likely, as Southern Democrats were in the past, they were probably economically populist and socially conservative, but I'm guessing.

In the past the District was known as the 3rd District and Marshall was the Rep. from that district from 2003-2007.  Then the districts were redrawn and now Marshall is the Rep. for the 8th District which was previously represented by Lynn Westmoreland who, incidentally, due to the redistricting is now the Rep. for the 3rd District.  Damn, that is confusing.

Before Marshall the 3rd District was represented by Mac Collins, Republican, from 1993-2003.  Before Collins the 3rd District was represented by Democrats, Richard Ray from 1983-1993, and Jack Thomas Brinkley from 1967-1983.

Marshall's district is not progressive but is very conservative, very religious and very, very pro-military.
