  •  And I leave aside the BS (12+ / 0-)

about how we have to accept this because black people are homophobic. That's a road I don't imagine many people want to go down.

    •  Seems many are exploring that theme (2+ / 0-)

in Geek's diary, actually, which is currently on the Rec List and is extraordinarily well written, whether you agree with it or not.

I guess we can consider your diary your answer--not.

    •  Like women going down that road with Bob Casey (0+ / 0-)

despite his anti-choice position?  50% of the electorate didn't want to go down that road!  But they did, because they were willing to put aside purity in favour of getting an overall decent Democrat onto a seat in the Senate.

And Bob Casey was the candidate, the one with the vote against us in Congress if the topic came up.

Not -- like McClurkin -- just a supporter.

So no, you don't have to accept it -- there are other candidates in the Primary, after all -- but holding one's nose while voting is something many of us have had to live with for a long, long time and I would say to the LGBT community that expecting 100% deference and accommodation from any candidate is a losing fight.  Best just to look at the whole candidate and see if there's an acceptable match rate overall, just as women do with the Bob Caseys of this world; and if there isn't, then vote for someone else.

        I'll happily get behind him.

In the meantime, I'm for Edwards, who -- the utterly incorrigible fool -- favours the death penalty, which is obviously the position of a complete caveman who needs to spend more time observing the justice systems of more civilized nations.  But the rest of the time he's great, so I can dig him well enough.

As long as people aren't so purist as to throw the General on some single grounds.  That would truly be tragic for the nation.

          •  This is all about the primary (3+ / 0-)

I have committed to no candidate so far.

a fundraisesr for him, or intentionally feeding us pablum and platitudes while he triangulates.

            •  True dat. (0+ / 0-)

Edwards may be wrong on the death penalty, but he's not in my face wrong about it.  Obviously if he were a rampant cheerleader in favour of hangin' 'em high, he wouldn't be my candidate in the first place!

I guess I'm just prepared to forgive Obama for this.  It does feel like a cock-up of campaign management to me and I'm loathe to pin onto the candidate a no-win situation of someone else's making (unless it's a Republican, of course, in which case no-win situations of someone else's making are the greatest sport I know).

Don't take my earlier hyperbole the wrong way; it was for effect only.  I'm actually about as much in love with Edwards as it's possible to be, given that we're both happily married to other people, and have never met.  :)

Casey was rammed down the voters' throats by Chuck Schumer and the Democratic leadership; they didn't just simultaneously decide, John Kerry-style, that he was the most 'electable' because he's anti-abortion (a rather ridiculous argument to begin with, since this is Pennsylvania, not South Carolina).
