      Didn't he start using the frenchified pronuncation before he developed the character? I thought that was his stage name, not just his character name.

      Similarly, Newt Gingrich changed the pronunciation of his name  at some point, probably because it was easier just to go with what people said (though that wouldn't apply to Colbert, unless everyone thinks of Claudette). His sister still pronounces it with a "k" sound at the end.

      And Dick and Lynne Cheney pronounce their name to rhyme with "meanie" but don't bother correcting all the people who rhyme it with "brainy".
