  •  Denver has several "parkway" streets (14+ / 0-)

I believe they were established by Mayor Robert Speer as part of the City Beautiful movement of the early 1900's.   On East 17th Avenue, East 6th avenue and North Monaco, there are very wide dividers between the two directions of multiple traffic lanes, and wide parking strips lushly planted with trees and flowers.  This time of year driving down them is such a visual treat, with the overhangs of multi-colored leaves and dappled autumn sunlight.

    •  It's funny (9+ / 0-)

How we have to relearn the value of trees and urban landscaping again and again. The city commissioner we were talking to pointed out how some of the progress our town has made is very subtle. Back in the late 1980s we had a commissioner that fought long and hard for full sidewalks and boulevard trees against the wishes of the cheapskate developers in new subdivisions. Today, as our commish pointed out, they are taken as the norm for any new development, and almost no one complains of the added "expense".

      •  What bothers me in Chicago (6+ / 0-)

is that the hacks usually run for Water Commission - it's handed around like it's a payback.  We have to get professionals in there.

Look also for privatization talk -- oi.

Now that I am cleaning up leaves - I have actually decided to do it with grace instead of my bitchin.  And I've asked the trees surrounding me on all sides to please shake their leaves on their patches where the owners hire landscapers to clean up.

What's the plan? The plan is I go in and start hitting people in the face hard. (Angel, from the Series)
