    Another item that repels slugs and snails is coffee grounds.  If you can find a cheap source for them in the springtime, take the grounds and, when the hostas are just beginning to stab out of the ground, pile on the coffee grounds wherever you see a hosta coming up.

    (Caffeine is poisonous to slugs & snails.)

    It works!  I've used it and never had a hosta nibbled until much later in the season.  Even then, if I'd reapplied, I probably would have avoided them altogether.
