  •  Religious right will rally to GOP in the end. (9+ / 0-)

The "splintering" of the religious right is no different than the "splintering" of the progressive left over candidates.

We hoot and holler about Clinton, Edwards and Obama but we know that we'll be out turning over palm trees to get (pick Democrat you like least) elected over whoever the Republican candidate is.

Same is true for religious right. Any Democrat is an anathema to them and they will work themselves into whirling dervishes to fight whatever "devil" is the Democratic nominee.

The fundies will, in the end, kiss and make up with the GOP because in the final analysis, they simply have nowhere else to go.  Their situation is a lot like that of the "labor movement" (such as it is) and the Democrats.  The party takes their money, takes their votes, and then doesn't actually do diddley for them.  The movement whines and yells, makes some threats, but in the end, shuts up and goes along with it -- because they simply can't do anything about it.  The fundies can no more leave the Republican Party and join the Democrats than the AFL-CIO can leave the Democrats and join the Republicans.  And since our electoral system specifically prevents the rise of third parties, neither the fundies nor the labor movement can go off on its own.

Both simply have no choice but to stay where they are, bitch and moan a bit, and in the end, hold their nose and vote for the "lesser evil" -- and accomplish nothing.

Oddly enough, progressives are in the very same position . . . . .
