    You can bet that the average citizen of Rome in the 390s didn't think more than passingly about Alaric and his immigrants, just as we don't worry much about mercenary armies "fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them over here."  I'd further wager that that Roman thought about the Goths plenty, though, once 408 came around and an unpaid barbarian army was encircling his city...
