  •  The fundamental problem (0+ / 0-) not a matter of dollars at all.  

    The problem is that a corporation wants to be a "person" when it is advantageous (such as free speech) then wants not to be a person when it comes to punishment.

    I think we all know that if a poor guy managed on his own to spill that oil, there would be a raft of laws against such gross misbehavior and he would rot in prison.  If we had justice, those same laws would apply to rich folks or corporations that cause the same harm.  

    I suggest that the corporation should be suspended from doing anything for the number of years equal to a sentence for a real person.  Thus the stockholders, living in limbo until the corporation is released from "prison", would make sure their corporations behave.

    Trying to equate this to dollars only hides the true problem.
