"Any president -- and I mean any president -- ought to be able to depend on a certain amount of deference from his or her Attorney General, of course."

No President deserves an AG any more deferential than Janet Reno was to Clinton, and that wasn't very much.  The nation not only deserves, but desperately needs, under any President, an AG who defers to the Law, and not the President, should the two get into any sort of conflict.

I propose the Janet Reno standard for the Bush Presidency.  He gets no one more pliable than Janet Reno.  This is more than fair to him, since he has a proven propenstiy to get into conflict with the Law, and really deserves no one more aggreeable than a party-label-reversed Kenneth Starr.

In fact, I propose Janet Reno for his AG.  The Congress should "advise" Bush to nominate Reno by de-funding every single one of his DoJ political appointees until he sees the wisdom of this advice and sends her name over for Senatorial consent.  She'ld have the twerp resigning inside of a week.

The way up and the way down are one and the same.
