  •  Um...spamming...what? (0+ / 0-)

Does he mean there were too many bloggers looking at his website?

Spam is generally referred to in an email sense...and the method they're using to block traffic has absolutely nothing to do with email.  Different ports, protocols and all that.

Somehow I doubt he was getting overwhelmed by flood of user traffic from blogspot.  The conversation must have gone something like this...

Admin: Our hit count's gone way up!
Smith: Must be those consarn bloggers...put a stop to it right now!

    •  The most feasible explanations I can think of are (0+ / 0-)
      1.  a bunch of Blogger users had a congresscritter's email addy posted on their blogs, and a spammer's robot got ahold of it or
      1.  a lot of spam has been coming in via their contact forms, which could be linked from Blogger blogs.

Now that I think of it, that is possible ... but like Dave said, that's assuming they're telling the truth.

      •  Comment "spam"...? (0+ / 0-)

I've sometimes heard junk or commercial-promoting comments in web forums referred to as "spam"; in the Wikipedia world, links posted into an article for the purpose of driving web traffic are referred to as "spam links".

For this to make sense though in this context, Smith's web site must have a forum or at least a "contact the congressman" form. If that's what they're referring to as "spam", the smart implementation is to take in all the traffic and filter into constituent and non-constituent buckets, perhaps further sub-dividing the data. The not-so-dumb implementation is to block only direct links to the forum/form; implementing the 404 rejection across the whole site is insane.

Any politician deliberately blocking traffic from potential constituents is an idiot.
