    I'd add to Rove's MO:

    1.  Identify your opponent's strengths, and attack them.
    1.  Identify your own weaknesses, and attack your opponent for them.  Known in psychology as projection.  Your first quote is an excellent example of Rove's projection:

The “netroots often argue from anger rather than reason, and too often, their object is personal release, not political persuasion,” said Rove.

    1.  Innoculate yourself against your gravest weaknesses by staging flawed and dirty attacks on yourself and attributing them to your opponent.  Examples include forging real TANG documents, bugging your own office, and telling a biographer that Bush did cocaine, and then smearing the author and driving him to committ suicide.

I suspect most of Rove's attacks are based on his pathological projection, and the reason we think he's identifying his opponents' strengths is because democrats kept selecting candidates based on Bush's weaknesses.  Thus, since Bush is weak on military service, dems dutifully ran a war hero against Rove.  But since Rove is projecting, he's going to attack ANY candidate on military service, because it draws attention away from Bush going AWOL.  If instead of Kerry, democrats had nominated a draft dodger, Rove would certainly have attacked his lack of military service.

Basically, Rove is best understood through the lens of abnormal psychology (much like his show-dog, Bush).  America responds to Rove because America's political culture is pathological.
