  •  Let's put it this way (0+ / 0-)

In 1960, I made 3,500 a year spent about 2,000 a year for every aspect of my life. Rent, car, food, gas, heating, school, clothes, utilities, entertainment, etc. The average household income was around 6,500 a year. Today, if you are just middle class, white or black, about $46,000 a year, average mortgage or rent is $12,000 to $15,000 a year, car costs about 2 or 3K a year (gas, up keep, payments, etc.), clothes 1,500 a year, utilities about 3,000, supplies and upkeep 2,500, food 2,000 and 1,500 entertainment. Then calculate of 30% of your 42K goes to Uncle Sam = 33,000 a year take home. Please show me where the average middle class citizen (white or black) experiences an increase in their standard of living. When I pointed out before it depends on your zip code, I meant this is now not just about Black America. There is definitely more AAs who have increased their earnings and wealth over the years. I would never dispute that. However, there are more that have not achieved that status. In fact, more people are below the poverty level than at any time in our nations history. If you wish, you can refer to my definition as "Relative poverty" which means significantly less access to income and wealth than other members of society.
