    I hope you're right. The 2006 experience suggests that you are. (Rick Santorum went down in flames trying to drum up the fear). But I don't think it's a sure thing.

       He stopped being careful about concealing his extreme wingnuttery, apparently believing that Pennsylvania had become Alabama, and the voters finally saw through him.

       I think the fearmongering was essentially a neutral factor in 2006 -- I don't think it particularly helped or hurt too many candidates. Iraq was THE issue.

       As for another attack being blamed on Republicans, I wouldn't be so sure. The political benefits of traumatic events tend to accrue to authoritarians -- way too many voters take leave of their rationality, as we saw in 2002 and 2004.
