    1. Huckabee has some medieval religious beliefs, like not believing in evolution. Even George Dubya was careful to always leave his personal beliefs somewhat ambigious depending on the audience. A lot of Americans don't believe in evolution, true, but a lot of Republican businessmen-types do. And people like Huckabee scare the living crap out of them. There's no way in hell a GOPer can get elected without Wall   Street, and there's no way in hell Wall Street is going to back Jed Clampett over Senator Clinton.
    1. The GOP base already hates Huckabee for (1) tax hikes and (2) his stance on immigration. He'll get the super fundies, but he won't get the grassroots Republicans who are the regular donors and volunteers.

Even so, I'd like to see his candidacy implode before he gets too far. Even the faint possibility of having a biblical literalist in the White House scares me.

Except George Dubya is smart enough (an aside: I never thought I'd ever in my life write that phrase) to keep from speaking too much scripture to get him in trouble.

Instead he uses code words, lots of dog-whistle phrases that get Christian conservatives all excited and that the rest of us don't hear.

        Huckabee doesn't use code words.

That makes him much less effective.

to the military-industrial complex, or, more generally, to the big corporations. Without those, his candidacy stands little chance.

Rudy's the man that the corporate cartels will gravitate towards. The defense industry, and the new, post-9/11 security industry, know that Giuliani will ensure a steady supply of new and lucrative business contracts, once he starts a war with Iran and institutes a police state at home. They will back him lavishly, knowing their investment will be returned many times over.

I do see a Giuliani-Huckabee ticket, in order to shore up the fundie base who crave Rudy's authoritarianism, but who need a cosmetic reason to vote for him. But Huckabee at the front of the ticket I don't see happening.

that they don't believe in evolution. Yeah, that's our fault as a society for doing a ridiculously poor job of educating Americans -- but there it is. So it's not a loser position in a U.S. national election. It is, at best for us, a non-issue.
