    If Romney wins the Republican nomination despite his Mormonism, he will be seen as having "overcome" that problem and "put it behind him".

    Similarly with Reagan and the age issue in 1980, or Clinton and Gennifer Flowers in 1992.  Once your "key weakness" has been hashed out in the primaries, the media is no longer interested, and the voters presumably figure it's no big deal anymore.
