  •  What about the '527s'? (6+ / 0-)

I remain cautious about the Dem fundraising advantage because it may be illusory. Why? Because I suspect the GOPers will be using the secretive 527s to do much of their dirty work once the primaries are over. Based on the success of the Swiftboat Veterans For Truth in '04, I have little doubt that the big guns among GOP contributors are going to be concentrating on pouring huge sums into character assassination, negative ads, voter suppression, and other  marginally illegal operations this election cycle.

With the FEC out of commission because of the von Spakovsky nomination, there will be no cops on the beat during this election, and thus no one to reign in the GOP's worst instincts. I expect to see a massive spewage of illegal tactics financed by the Scaifes, the Pickens, and the other funders of underhanded tactics. Using 527s, these people can pour 10s or 100s of million dollars into the campaign with no restrictions, identification, or consequences. Dems will be facing a mountain of GOP filth beginning next spring, and they should be preparing for it

    •  Don't doubt that "our" 527s will sit by (5+ / 0-)

Move On are sitting on piles of cash, as are the Firefighter organizations just itching to take on that  noun-verb-9/11 crossdresser

      •  I like it (0+ / 0-)

The 2008 Presidential election, starring Rudy Guiliani as "The noun-verb-9/11 Crossdresser," and Hillary Clinton as "The (Fill in your opinion here)!"

Don't miss it....as if  you could! (insert evil cackle here) It'll be EVERYWHERE on your televisions ALL YEAR!

(can't you just feel the excitement?)

      •  But they don't play as dirty as the GOP. (1+ / 0-)

There is a huge ethical difference between Freedom's Watch and MoveOn. MoveOn is not secretive and goes about it's business in an open manner. GOP 527s, on the other hand, are secretive, refuse to disclose the source of their funds, and specialize in lying,  character assassination, and ambushes. There is a world of difference.

      •  The Firefighters (0+ / 0-)

Those firefighters have the potential to put out an ad nearly identical to the Swift Boat one against Kerry, with the distinction that the firefighters will be telling the truth.

I mean, picture it. One working-class 9/11 "veteran" after another, saying, "I was at ground zero." "I was at ground zero". "Guliani didn't do squat for New York when we needed him."

And considering that, like Kerry, Guliani is staking most of his bid for the White House on his participation in one crucial episode of American history, and the firefighters are undermining the very thing that is supposed to make Rudy strongest...the parallels are astonishing.

Couldn't happen to a nicer fucktard, too.

Only thing is, the Swift Boat thing depended on the media giving it lots and lots of publicity. Wanna bet on whether they'll do the same for our firefighters, or whether they'll stay above the fray on unseemly negative ads? After all, our ads will be different from the swift boaters. The firefighters will be telling the truth.

the Firefighters ads are getting plenty of play, and you're 100% right about the crossdressing fucknut being a one trick pony, hence easier to derail.

I hope our candidate, the DNC, our 527s and others go apeshit on him
