but isn't your neglect of the your eastern European 'brothers' and 'sisters' a bit ethnocentric?  They don't produce (mostly) any of those high end exports you mentioned and they certainly don't benefit from their sale as much and you Western Europeans... unless you count CAP subsides- but a well managed and forward thinking Europe wouldn't keep those subsidies up forever, would they?  That would be a bit like an American Farm bill.

    •  Think of our eastern brothers and sisters (1+ / 0-)

the way we do red states. They suck more out of the country than they contribute. However, if we treat them right, they may eventually pull their weight.

but as I speak, there are huge efforts at investing in real capital in the former DDR.  One segment of Stern TV last week was devoted to a small town that I no longer remember where a major computer chip factory and research complex was built and how the local economy suddenly shot up in worth.  A major thing in a part of the country where unemployment is as high as 18% in some parts.

It also has the benefit of castrating the platform of the National Democrat Party (resurgent neo-Nazis, the real ones) political platform of "them foreigners are taking our jobs".  At least in Germany, eastern brothers and sisters are being invested in, and it is a good thing.
