Stella sued because she was burned by superhot coffee -- not because her Sunday finest was ruined. It wasn't Mcs fault that her clothes were stained, but it was their fault that she was burned. Plus, she was found by the jury to be partially responsible for her burns because Mcs was not at fault for the spill, and her damages were proportinately reduced. This case had merit, was carefully considered and judged, and makes sense.

The point is very simple -- it is plain stupid to serve superhot coffee to an 81 year old lady, especially when you've burned people before.

The best intentions in the world, placed on a shelf, are worthless.
