i was living in tacoma when the ASARCO smokestack came down, as well as when they finally lost that class action lawsuit and had to warn everyone in the north end and ruston way not to let kids play in the dirt because of the toxins that they'd sworn for years weren't there. rumor had it that they'd built blacktop in local schools with the tailings, but i never found out if it was true or not.

the metaphor of lutheran utopians as late succession species is inspired. it's really hard to think past the nature:civilization binary that's been in our culture since rome if not earlier, and see humans for another part of the ecosystem. your writing makes this point exceptionally well IMO.

I wanted to make the point of humans in the ecosystem without flogging it. It's become important to me - kind of environmentalism meets populism.

I ran across an interesting article about the Tacoma Process, which I wish I could have worked in, but I had so many other things that got left out and the length was getting excessive. There are so many other connections from all of this - both personal and community - but they take so long to explain.

Worked for the Courtneys (who basically are Stehekin) - my wife knows some of them. As I commented somewhere else here: we took some friends up to Stehekin and decided to hike to Rainbow Falls, but never made it past the bakery - it was that good. And my wife hates Stehekin now - too much traffic :)

I may never get to see Rainbow Falls.
