ignored too, in these debates. We're new, but hey, age and truth aren't the same.  And we don't beel;ive other people's religions are wrong but that there are inifntie paths to the Center of the Circle.

This time of year is a good time to reflect on the fact that the solstice was celebrated long before  the Church moved Jesus' birthday to try to capitalize on the event.  Much of the paraphenalia used by Christians actually comes from this celebration.  There are a lot of religious roots to the pre Christian rite as well.

My own myth of the origin of religion goes back to primitive man experiencing the days getting shorter and fearing that the sun would dissapear.  They tried sacrifices and other ploys and lo and behold they worked! The sun came back and the days got longer.

An idea is not responsible for who is carrying it. It stands or falls on its own merits.

behind all solstice celebrations. ANd I see little difference between celebrating the return of Light to the world of the birth of the Light of the WOrld.  Myhsuband, like me, is Cletic WIccan with a tinge of Norse--who also sat ZaZen at Kamakura--ENlgihtnement! (and the day Biuddha reched enlightenment is also celebrated in Dec--just a couple of days ago).

      •  Actually, Wicca isn't, and (0+ / 0-)

most of us acknowledge that. Gerald Gardner is the oen responsible for its current incarnation--we're a reconstructed religion (much of Gardnerian Wiccan ritual is borrowed from Free Masonry, including the initiation ceremony). SOme of ythe other branches have a made a schoalrly attempt to  get clsoer to out pagan ancestry, but it's hard, for example, for Irish and Celtic pagans to do so, because all we know about druidism comes from Caesar--not an unbiased osurce.   The Irish didn't write thigns down.  SO, we're a new hosue but built on an ancient foudnation
