    The AP reported recently that:

"...Religious vigilantes have killed at least 40 women this year in the southern Iraqi city of Basra because of how they dressed, their mutilated bodies found with notes warning against "violating Islamic teachings," the police chief said Sunday."

"...The women of Basra are being horrifically murdered and then dumped in the garbage with notes saying they were killed for un-Islamic behavior," Khalaf told The Associated Press. He said men with Western clothes or haircuts are also attacked in Basra..."

This is the "democracy" that Bush trumpeted as one of his many ever-changing reasons for invading Iraq? When one ignores the Bush Administration’s words regarding "democracy" in Iraq and looks at what they’ve done/not done to support "democracy"—it’s clear that the supposed "democracy" is merely an illusion.

What really is frightening to me about these reports is that IMHO, the religious fundamentalists here, the zealots, have had the ear of the President for the last seven years, and have worked tirelessly to foist their views of "democracy" on everyone in this country.  Now one of them who currently is running for President has been reported to say that "Wives Should Graciously Submit to Their Husbands". If he’s publicly preaching his fundamentalist views before an election, what could he do to enforce his doctrines if he becomes President? When zealots are given a free reign to make and enforce a country’s laws, things can get very ugly and Democracy could become nothing but a fond memory.
