    a Democrat is a Democrat, even if he's like Zell Miller or Ben Nelson or otherwise acts entirely like a Republican, since self-identification is the ultimate source of meaning....I don't think most people here will buy that. Or do people only get away with this in religion? Is it strictly a hereditary label? When did "Christianity" become a "tribe" anyway? It's always been the sort of religion anyone can join, like Islam, consisting of people of all races and ethnic groups, so the notion of Christians as a "tribe" seems wrong (though descriptive of the way the religious right see themselves).

    As for words having meaning, I remember a time when "Christian," at least when used as an adjective, meant tolerant and generous. Sadly, those days seem long gone now.
