  •  Thanks, I was trying to be clever... (19+ / 0-)

back when the Republicans controlled the Senate overtly, and the corporate media dutifully parroted R talking points about how terrible it was for a small minority of 41 Democrats to thwart the will of the people, it was a frequent refrain of Republican Senators unless the "Democrat Party" allowed an "upperdown vote" on extremist judges, then, well, that means the terraists have won or something.

It was around this time that the "Gang of Fourteen" stepped in to forestall the Republicans from invoking the "nucular option" to effectively end filibusters forever (at least on nominations), by agreeing that if the Democrats gave Bush and the Republicans everything they wanted, then in exchange the Republicans would stop stealing the Democrats' lunch money for a week (or something like that, I forget the precise details of the agreement)...

For their bold and bipartisan leadership, of course, the Gang of Fourteen were rewarded by the eternal thanks of a greatful Washington punditocracy, and sloppy wet kisses from David Broder.
