    his nephew fathered children with Sally Hemings, who was supposedly fathered by his father in law with one of his slaves.
    It appears that there was no large problem with Jefferson's owning blood relatives as the first of the children were freed in 1822 and the rest in the will of 1826. The children were born between 1798 and 1808 so the oldest was an adult when freed. Sally was never freed.  
    The Monticello Organization and the Jefferson family has spent a great deal of energy in trying to disprove any link between themselves and the Heming descendants (three of whom later "passed" and lived as whites later in life)
